A market built on asterisks
Walk into any Indian pet store and read the labels.
“Contains glucosamine.” Contains how much? “With probiotics.” Which strain, at what CFU count, viable until when? “For joint health.” Backed by which study? “Natural ingredients.” Natural is not a regulated term. Or worst, no labelling at all or confusing dosage mathematical puzzles.
The Indian pet supplement market has grown at a remarkable pace over the past five years. Driven by rising pet ownership, post-pandemic premiumisation and humanisation of the family dog. But growth has outrun governance. The shelf is now crowded with products that look credible, sound credible, and very often are not.
We don’t blame the government for it - there are 1.5bn people in India and priorities are likely focusing on food, shelter and welfare of people. But that’s where brands need to be responsible and help accountable to ensure pets are taken care of.
Pet parents notice. Three years into ownership, the average urban Indian dog owner has tried four or five supplement brands, watched two or three of them fail to do anything, and arrived at the only rational response: scepticism or conclusion that it is just snake oil.
The Honest Pet Co. - ho.pe. - was built for that scepticism. Not to sell into it, but to satisfy it.
The four problems we set out to solve
Before we built a single hoplet™ , we conducted 2 years of formulation research, competitor teardowns and conversations with practising veterinarians across India, the United Kingdom, Germany, Belgium and the United States. The same four failure modes kept surfacing. And they remain the four most common reasons supplements quietly fail to work.
1. Sub-therapeutic dosing. The active ingredient is present, but at a fraction of the dose required to produce a measurable clinical effect. A glucosamine “supplement” containing 50mg per chew, when peer-reviewed canine osteoarthritis trials require 20mg/kg/day, is not a supplement. It is a placebo with a price tag.
2. Filler-heavy formulations. Artificial flavours to mask poor base ingredients. Sugar and colours to drive palatability. By-products to lower the cost of manufacturing. The dog might enjoy eating it. But the dog does not benefit from eating it.
3. Poor compliance formats. Powders that are sticky, smelly and get rejected. Pills that get spat out. Liquid drops that get hidden in food and licked around. The most efficacious formula in the world is worthless if the dog won't take it for ninety consecutive days.
4. Ultra-high-heat-degraded actives and processing. Most supplements in India are extruded under extreme manufacturing conditions at heat of 120 to 180°C. Essentials vitamins and live probiotics die above 45°C. Vitamins C and the entire B-complex degrade. Omega-3s oxidise. The label remains intact. The contents do not.
ho.pe. addresses all four. It is the investment in setting standards with our own in-house manufacturing that is internationally compliant. It’s as clean as your home kitchen. As a brand we invite parents, vets and activists to come visit and see our facilities and we encourage other brands to do the same.
Clinical nutrition, without compromise
ho.pe. operates as a UK-headquartered brand manufacturing in India, formulated to AAFCO (US) and FEDIAF (EU) compliance standards. Our facility is ISO 22000:2018, GMP and HACCP certified. All ingredients used are sourced from pharma-grade providers only with proper Certificate of Analysis.
The product itself is built around three non-negotiables:
-
Pharma-grade actives at clinical doses. Each hoplet ™ delivers ingredients at the levels established in peer-reviewed canine literature. E.g. 2 billion CFU of Enterococcus faecium - the only EFSA-approved canine probiotic strain, 200mg of Glucosamine HCL, 230mg of Alaska Omega Fish Oil, 75mg of curcumin. The doses match the science.
-
Cold-pressed, air-dried. The manufacturing process is the difference between a probiotic count that is theoretical and one that is actual. By keeping every hoplet ™ below the heat threshold preserved across veterinary nutraceutical research, ho.pe. ensures the label says exactly what’s in the product.
-
European and American science, formulated for Indian conditions. Our Expert Panel comprises of specialists from Germany, UK, Belgium, USA and India. The base science is global. The active ingredient choices - turmeric, hing, ashwagandha alongside glucosamine, MSM and EFSA-approved probiotics - are calibrated for the climate, diet and pathogen environment Indian dogs actually live in.
“When I prescribe a supplement, I want to know three things: what's in it, how much of it, and whether the dog will eat it. Most of the Indian market struggles to clear all three. ho.pe. clears all three by design. That's why it has become my default recommendation for dogs with chronic gut, skin or joint issues.”
- Dr. Megan Bolduc, DVM, Veterinarian, Expert Panel ho.pe.
The most common problems that our dogs face - skin allergies, shedding, paw licking, joint and mobility, anxiety are caused by nutritional deficiencies. All solvable with ho.pe.’s range of real chicken and vegan supplements.
The institutional trust ho.pe. has built
Brands earn credibility in two ways: by what they say about themselves, and by who chooses to stand behind them. The latter is harder to manufacture.
ho.pe.has a growing community of pet parents across India. It is now stocked and used across the most credible veterinary and retail channels in the country.
Vetic - India's largest veterinary clinic chain. ho.pe. Hoplets ™ are prescribed and dispensed across Vetic clinics in Delhi, Noida and Gurgaon.
DCC Animal Hospital - One of the most clinically respected independent veterinary practices in the National Capital Region. Inclusion in DCC's recommendation list is a benchmark in the regional vet community.
Vets all over the country including Fairy Tails Goa, Val-U-Vet Noida trust ho.pe. Premium pet specialty stores such as Pawparazzi (Hyderabad),Sicons The Pet Park (Delhi NCR), Le Marche (Delhi, Noida, Gurgaon) all trust ho.pe.
Tata 1mg, Swiggy Instamart, Amazon are all platforms that trust and offer ho.pe. To customers across India.
Each of these partners conducts independent quality and compliance due diligence before stocking a product. Each one chose to stock ho.pe. The pattern of inclusion is not coincidence. It is consensus.
The people behind the formula
ho.pe. is formulated by an expert panel that very few Indian pet brands could assemble. It was ambitious to do so, but also because we believed it was the minimum bar.
Our lead formulator being a Double PhD in Animal Nutrition with a specialisation in canine gut health. Author and co-author of peer-reviewed work on probiotic strain selection and gastrointestinal health in companion animals.
Ms. Passman - UK-based animal nutritionist for over 30 years and currently advises leading dog and cat nutrition brands. Brings deep expertise in regulatory compliance across FEDIAF and AAFCO frameworks.
Dr. Bolduc, DVM - Veterinarian. Oversees clinical efficacy validation and prescription protocols.
Team of veterinary scientists and animal nutritionists. One double-doctorate. Every formulation passes through all three before it reaches a manufacturing line.
Trust as a compounding asset
In categories like dog supplements, trust is not a marketing output. It is the only output that matters.
Pet parents do not have the laboratory access to verify the actual dosage count themselves. They cannot run high-performance liquid chromatography on a fish oil capsule to test for oxidation. They are, of necessity, trusting the brand.
ho.pe. has approached that trust the only way it can be sustainably built - by structurally removing the conditions under which it could be violated.
- The doses are clinical because they are tested in a third-party lab.
- High bioavailability because of gentle heat manufacturing.
- The ingredients are clean and pharma-grade because there is no second-tier supplier list.
- The expert panel signs off on every formulation because no formulation ships without their review.
- The vets prescribe it because the dogs they prescribe it to get better.
It is our operating system.
The honest promise
ho.pe.'s tagline is intentionally “Zero-Askteris Nutrition.” Each word was chosen carefully.
No fine print. No buried disclaimers. No claims that need a footnote to survive scrutiny. What is on the label is what is in the chew. What is in the chew is what reaches the dog.
This is the standard the Indian dog supplement market should always have had. ho.pe. is here to make sure it does now.
